The 2012 China International Cotton Trade Training Course in Qingdao has successfully concluded, with 110 delegates from 13 different provinces and regions taking part.

The training was developed specifically for the Chinese cotton community and focused on areas currently impacting on China's international cotton trade and the global cotton market. The three-day interactive course took place from 31 July to 2 August in Qingdao, Shandong Province and was jointly organised by the International Cotton Association (ICA) and Beijing Cotton Outlook Consulting (BCO).

Speaking on behalf of the organisers, Dr Robert Jiang, ICA's China Business Development Officer, said:  "As the global cotton market experiences another volatile season, contract disputes remain on the increase. This training has been developed to help address some of these issues. It focusses on the challenges China cotton import companies face in today's market, with particular emphasis on the contract making process, dispute resolution and arbitration. We were delighted with the take-up rate, which indicates a real need for the training and we definitely plan to hold another course in China next year to fulfil demand."

The training commenced with opening speeches from Dr Jiang and Ms Guo Rongmin, General Manager of BCO, followed by presentations comprising the following modules - each conducted in Chinese and delivered by a leading industry expert:

• Fundamental knowledge:  World cotton market and import/export; major cotton export countries and their characteristics
• Trading issues:  Risk management; contract making, banking and insurance, futures and options; shipping and logistics; cotton controlling and testing
• Trading rules and dispute resolution:  International trading rules, arbitration agreement; arbitration procedure; arbitrator training

Based on feedback from last year's course, which was held in Zhangjiagang, the 2012 programme saw some changes, which, according to Dr Jiang, improved the overall delegate experience:   "Throughout the training, the delegates were actively involved in discussions, which generated a truly interactive atmosphere and a chance to share ideas, industry knowledge and practical learning. We made the training much more interactive - with more case studies and examples of trade issues, problems and pitfalls. We also added more time for Q&As."

One delegate to benefit from the training was Mr Gao Mingzhi of Shandong Daiyin Textile Group Share Co Ltd: "I would like to thank the ICA and BCO for holding such an advanced training course on cotton trading. By using practical trade examples and excellent, interactive Q&A sessions, the training has benefited me tremendously. I am looking forward to the next one, which I hope will be even better."
