The cotton reserve purchase of 2012/13 season has closed by the end of March. With expectations of new reserve purchase and reserve release policy, the cotton spot market was in the mood of cautious. Textile market was witnessing more orders and domestic cotton price increased steadily.
1.CC Index in March
1.1Spot price increased slightly.
Cotton spot price rose slightly during March. By the end of the month, CC Index328 was 19,375 Yuan per ton, 50 Yuan up over the month, up by 0.3%. The monthly average was 19,356 Yuan per ton, 68 Yuan up over the month, 0.4% up, while 200 Yuan down Y/Y by 1%.
1.2Inland price increased slightly
Monthly average prices for type 328 and 429 in Shandong were 19,399 Yuan per ton and 18,686 Yuan per ton, 0.2% up and 0.3% up over the month separately. Type 328 and 429 in Hebei had monthly average price of 19,492 Yuan per ton and 19,005 Yuan per ton, 0.4% up over the month.
1.3Grade premium decreased slightly for high grade cotton
Taking CC Index328 as the benchmark, premium of type 129 reduced from 6.1% to 5.8%. By the end of January, and type 229 decreased from 3.8% to 3.6%. Premium of type 429 stayed at -3.0% and type 527 was -12.3% also unchanged.
2. Major influential factors on domestic cotton price in March
2.1 reserve release trade more than one million
By the end of March, reserve release trade was more than one million ton. The earlier release was mainly 2011/12 seasonal domestic resource; the market was expecting changes in April release.
2.2 reserve purchase ended with 6.5 million ton
Cotton reserve purchase closed with trade volume of 6.51 million ton by the end of the March, which was nearly 90% of the annual output, reducing resource in market largely.
2.3 increased textile orders
In March textile market saw recovery signals with more orders, especially for high-end product, at the same time, international cotton price drove some earlier orders back from Southeast Asia; however, the market outlook was still unpromising due to demand reason.
2.4 commercial cotton prices increased
In March, CNCE forward contract MA1309 average price increased by 324 Yuan, active contract MA1305 average price increased by 288 Yuan, while rest contracts witnessed increase from 100 Yuan to 300 Yuan.
2.5 international cotton price increased, narrowing down the price gap.
Due to increase of international cotton price, FC Index M average price this month was 96.83 cent/lb. 5.56 cent up over the month, which was 15,501 Yuan under 1% tariff and 16,131 Yuan under sliding duties, separately 3,855 Yuan and 3,225 Yuan lower than domestic equivalents, the price gaps home and abroad narrowed down by 825 Yuan and 600 Yuan.
