A historical clothing exhibit, giving a peek into the exotic dressing styles of the rulers and nobles from the glorious Chinese Ming and Qing dynasties, is currently going on at the Shandong Provincial Museum, located in the capital city of Jinan, Shandong Province, China.
Scheduled to run till June 18, 2013, the exhibition features more than 200 dresses sourced from the Palace Museum (Beijing), Shandong Provincial Museum and Qufu Cultural Relics Management Committee.
The first display area showcases clothes and accessories of Zhu Tan (1370-89), the son of the Ming Dynasty founder Zhu Yuanzhang. The exhibits include a yellow-brocade satin robe decorated with four golden-threaded dragons.
The exhibition’s second segment features nearly 60 attires, worn by the Ming aristocrats and courtiers. Exhibiting the dominance of Manchu sensibilities over Han styles, the display includes fox-fur overcoats, robes, skirts, travel jackets and shawls.
Some of the display’s Ming Dynasty exhibits were sourced from the Kong Family Mansion, the historical residence of Confucius and his descendants.
Infused with the ancient Han styles, the loose fitting Ming clothing features elaborate details.
Influenced by ethnic Manchu tailoring, the traditional Qing attires incorporate tight-fitting silhouettes with narrow sleeves.
