The Government of Guinea Bissau, a country in western Africa, has approved investment proposals of entrepreneurs from China’s Liaoning province in cotton farming sector.

A delegation of Chinese investors, currently in Guinea Bissau, visited the Bafata region in the eastern part of the country, where local residents welcomed the idea of revival of cotton farming in their locality, Xinhua reported.

The resumption of cotton growing would greatly help the region fight against poverty, as it would give them an alternative to production of cashew nuts, which did not fetch good price in 2013, a local chief said.

Alfucence Bure, former coordinator of cotton farming project in Bafata, said cotton production would be more profitable for local people compared to cashew nut production, and would have positive impact on poverty reduction, particularly in Bafata, Gabu and Oio regions.

Cotton was produced in Bafata region until 2002, and most of it was exported to France.

The Guinea Bissau Government has also okayed Chinese investment in the country’s agriculture, fisheries, housing and energy sectors.
